Introduction to the Piano

Welcome to the 21st Century Piano Online Piano Course.

In the following posts you will learn how to play the piano, as well as about music in general.

The course is designed for you to use without any previous instruction. However, if you would like to read more about the course, the following notes should help you.

Instrument

Although you can make your way through the first few pages without owning an instrument, it is strongly suggested that you invest either in a keyboard or a piano. You can find advice about this on the Buying a Piano post.

Music Notation

This course will use very simple music notation, which will make it easier to learn, regardless of the style of music you want to play. Each new symbol will have a link to a glossary where you can read more if you don’t understand.

Practice

It is suggested that you progress through 1 lesson every day, which should take between 5 to 10 minutes. If you are finding it very easy, then you can progress through more. But be careful not to overdo it, as it’s very common for motivation to peak too soon before rapidly diminishing.

Further Help

Although this course is designed to help you all the way through to proficiency, it is important that you develop good technique. You can achieve this by following the instructions carefully and not trying to learn too much too soon.

Otherwise, you may want to book regular or occasional lessons with a Piano Teacher, just to check you are doing things in the right way. You can search for teachers in your area on the Teacher Finder page.
